Providing a Workplace That Has a Feeling of Psychological Safety Will Lead to the Creation of Value through the Power of Diversity

Miwa Yamada

Executive Officer and Senior Manager of the Diversity and Inclusion Promotion Department

Here at the Sekisui House Group, we have set the three pillars of our diversity and inclusion promotion policy as promoting the participation of women, utilizing diverse personnel, and promoting diverse workstyles. We are working to create an environment and structure where both employees and the company can achieve sustainable growth.

What is important in the promotion of diversity is the concept of “Diversity & Inclusion,” or “D&I.” First of all, organizations and workplaces must be environments in which all individuals recognize and respect each others’ differences in terms of age, gender, nationality, personality, value, lifestyle, and so on. Then, they can construct circumstances and environments in which goals and individual roles are clearly defined and information is shared, everyone is respectful of and can rely on each other, each individual proactively participates and contributes, and each person feels that they are being utilized as a member of the team. This will allow them to realize a workplace where there is a feeling of psychological safety, which in turn will lead to the creation of value through the power of diversity. This is what we at Sekisui House firmly believe.

Communication Is the First Step in D&I

Diversity is not something that exists purely outside of oneself: it is also present within each individual. You must take notice of, and recognize, this diversity within yourself. In other words, self-acceptance will lead directly to recognizing the diversity of others. On the other hand, coming in contact with those who have different attributes and values to oneself can also be said to lead one to discovering the diversity within oneself. The most important point here is communication. To promote diversity, it is critical to establish a “flat” relationship wherein employees can communicate openly not only with customers and business partners but also among themselves, regardless of positions or titles. Within such a workplace, I believe that we can achieve the kind of “Innovation & Communication” that the Sekisui House Group values.

In Order to Make Home the Happiest Place in the World, Our Employees Must All Be Happy First

The Sekisui House Group’s global vision is “making home the happiest place in the world.” In order to achieve that vision, we must build a corporate culture that allows each and every employee of the Sekisui House Group, as they challenge themselves to provide the new value that is “happiness,” to experience happiness themselves, and we must become the world’s happiest company.

Through the promotion of D&I, we will push forward with both the establishment of a workplace environment where anyone can continue to work happily, with peace of mind, in their own way, and the building of an organization that will develop and utilize diversity and autonomy.
