Since joining Sekisui House, Ms. Uchida has been in charge of sales administration support at her current sales office. In October 2013 she took maternity and childcare leave for 18 months, and returned to work in April 2015. Ms. Uchida is currently using the shorter working hours system to reduce her work time to between 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., so she can balance work with raising her son.

Better communication helps me be more prepared for the work to be done

It has been five years since I returned to work after giving birth to my son; he’s now in elementary school. As he starts and ends school earlier now, I’m using the Sliding Work Schedules System to start and also leave work earlier. The Chief Manager of the sales office where I work has been my senior colleague since I joined the company, and we are both right in the middle of raising our children. As a senior colleague, and also as the parent of a son, we are able to talk to each other about various things. This mutual understanding also enables me to work flexibly, and balance work with raising my son. Maternity and childcare leave has made a huge difference in how I manage my time. I never know when my son might become sick, so I work every day trying to make sure that even if I am unable to come to work the next day, I have everything under control. I’m also making a greater effort to communicate more with my colleagues at the sales office. This has made it easier to check how customer negotiations are going, have an idea of which projects may be ordered, and smoothly complete other preparations and work. I really appreciate the understanding and cooperation I receive from the Chief Manager, superiors and colleagues at my office. I will keep doing my best at work with an even more “can-do” attitude.
